Teachers' Week Part 3

There are two kinds of people in this world: the Givers, and the Takers. Most of us are somewhere between the two ends of a spectrum. I'd like to highlight two guys who have given me more than I'd ever expect to receive: Eugene Gan and Samson Cheung. They are from my Monkey batch. Also, I'd like to show u the wonderful class of 2F, my Rooster batch. I am so grateful to be your teacher once. Thank you all.

Sunday Special! - Otto Puss

When you are in town this weekend, drop by one of those cool caffeine hangouts. Pick up a free copy of Aug 24 issue of I-S magazine. The cover story by Creative Editor Terry Ong features 5 Singaporean comic artists, including Sonny Liew, Troy Chin, Koh Hong Teng, Ken Foo and myself. There's an online version without the artists' pictures and drawings:

More Creativity

Latest news (thanks 2 Nigel C): the latest issue of I-S magazine, purveyer of all things hot in town, contains a feature on the local indie comic scene. Look for Sir Fong in there looking goofy!

The Singapore Discovery Centre has put up the Artist Infos on participating artists, and you can see my brand new avatar on site. I'm so honored! George Nonis, the creator of Hello Chok Tong Goodbye Kuan Yew, is one of the artists whose works I get to exhibit along side!

Creativity

I promised I'd post the back cover of my first comic "Buddy Buddy" today. But that must wait. I also promised I'd post pictures of good mobile projects by my students. So I'm delighted I am fulfilling that promise. This is by two really wonderful fellas from 1B - guess their names, they're here somewhere - and everyone in the Staff Room loved this to bits!

Sunday Special! - Monkey Love Pt 1

This is my first baby, titled Buddy Buddy. I drew everything in 4 months, holed up in my dormitary in Beijing Film Academy. Surprisingly, I found a publisher and it was born in 1998! As you can see, every comic of mine has a monkey! I'll post the back cover page and another sample page two days later.

Daydreams Diffuse into My Head

Today we were in da lab, sniffing ever so cautiously the stenchy ammonia. Stimulating discussions on diffusion and osmosis aside, how many were daydreaming away? :)

RI Lecture!

Since Thursday is RI Lecture, here's a light-hearted take on another lecture . . .
To be fair to all voters of the previous poll, some do want to see some press coverage related to Sir Fong. So here's one from i-Weekly 2006. Part 2 will be posted next!

Test Weeeekkkkk!!!!!

This is Week 8 in RI. We begin our mad sprint towards the September one-week break. Our brave little soldiers hunker down to test after test after assignments. As 1B's Jordan cbox-ed, there should be some cool mobile projects. I hope to put them up on display on this blog. So please alert me to take pictures if your class has worthy ones!

Of course, here's a test-related Sir Fong:

Looking at the poll, more of you prefer that I just focus on Sir Fong comics. I shall follow ur advise. Of cos, I can't post answers to future tests, so you darn silly 4 voting the last option! And here's a strip for everyone who'd ever been tempted to glance at your neighbours' test answers. Sir Fong is watching!!!!

Ouch!

What were eunuchs? In one significant way they were like your pet male dog or cat: neutered to prevent them from causing unwanted pregnancies. Except eunuchs were humans.
You can ask your History teachers more about eunuchs. In Singapore history, Admiral Cheng Ho was the most famous eunuch. He hailed from China and was instrumental in Chinese settling into S.E. Asia. In a way, all S.E. Asian Chinese are his descendents. He was a great man.
Spiritually, Cheng Ho had more balls than a golf course pond.
This strip was inspired by Wong Tuck Wai (aka Tucky) and Daniel Ng, two wonderful Monkey batch students. May they continue to inspire those around them wherever they go!

Ti Ger Deep Breath!

A school holiday! That's when I wake up at 8am, go to my window, and take a deep breath.

Below: a scene when Sir Fong 1 was launched in Raffles Institution. Can u identify four of my former form class students (Monkey batch!!!) and one Number One Fan(NOF)? NOF kept making fun of my signature during the book signing.

The Answer To Life, The Universe and Everything!

Happy Birthday, Singapore! It's our 42nd year, and we're feeling proud we made it so far!
Incidentally, "42" is also the Answer To Life, The Universe and Everything, according to the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by the late, beloved Douglas Adams.

Sunday Special! - Sir Fong at the Zoo Pt 2

(click for larger images)

Winning the competition gave resolve for me to switch from playwrighting to cartooning. With the age of the internet and handphone messages, the Age of the Visual dawns. Also, when I completed my diploma in Beijing Film Academy in 1997, my first comic book "Buddy Buddy" was being prepped for printing.

This is really a Sunday Super Special: a brand new strip inspired by 1D's Mephistopholese!

Sunday Special! - Sir Fong at the Zoo Pt 1

I participated in the People's Association's comic drawing competition "Toon Craze Toon Grace" in 2000. Winning first and third in the Adult Category, Hup, a New Paper cartoonist, gave me a unique full page interview: I would draw my character and the background, and he would draw his regular Boy Boy character 'interviewing' mine.

2000 is also the year I changed directions from playwright to cartoonist. In 1999, my last and biggest play, Mr Beng, was staged in the old Victoria Theatre (every playwright's dream was to stage at Victoria Theatre) at the Arts Fest. The buzz was good and tickets sold out quickly.

This is the top half of the interview. As the file size is larger, I have split the page into halves and posting both today and tomorrow.
